What is a no-confidence motion?
A no-confidence motion is a parliamentary motion which is moved in the Lok Sabha against the entire council of ministers. It states that they are no longer deemed fit to hold positions of responsibility due to their inadequacy in some respect or have failed to carry out their obligations.
Here is why we think the no-confidence motion is going to benefit the opposition as well as the present government rather than benefitting us-
OPPOSITION
1. TIMING
There were several instances in the past 4.5 years when the opposition should have questioned the government aptly playing the role of a responsible opposition. The timing of the no-confidence motion suits them, as they can register their presence in the minds of the voters.
2. UNITY
In 2014, the Opposition was scattered – fighting from their own forts. They had no idea how strong and dangerous the opponent was. They all fought separately and were defeated. By being together in the no-confidence motion, the opposition is projecting itself as being united which might garner them more votes in 2019 elections.
3. LEVERAGE
Reacting to the political developments, the opposition leaders can leverage from the no-confidence motion by upsetting the ruling party’s 2019 election campaign and lay the groundwork for their own plans. Who would mind a few moments in the limelight before the grand show?
4. FAILURE
TDP and the INC have moved a no-confidence motion against the government in Parliament which is being debated in the Lok Sabha. What does it mean when both the TDP and the INC know it very well that the motion is going to fail as the government has a complete majority? It is an utter waste of resources but serves well to the motives of the opposition.
5. STRENGTH
As per the opposition, it wants to utilise this opportunity to raise issues like unemployment, farmer’s issue, corruption, communal tensions, and price rise. In reality, the opposition is trying to fathom its strength against the government.
RULING
6. REAL ISSUES
The government needs to address various issues concerning the country which has already been delayed. Many bills are also stuck due to disruptions in the parliament. The no-confidence motion of the opposition will give a reason to the government to justify its inefficiencies.
7. LAUNCH 2019
The BJP has already started its campaign for the 2019 elections with massive rallies in UP but no-confidence motion debate in the parliament can serve the purpose better as a great number of Indians are expected to be watching the debate. The PM himself acknowledged the fact this morning and advised the fellow party members to behave well in the parliament.
8. ABSOLUTION
Ahead of the debate on no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha, all central ministries and departments were directed to prepare a list of achievements of the government which could be highlighted during the no-confidence motion debate. This is how the present government benefits from the ongoing no confidence motion.
9. STRENGTH
There are at present 535 members in the Lok Sabha. The ruling NDA has 312 members in the Lok Sabha, 273 of the BJP, 18 of Shiv Sena, six LJP and four SAD. The NDA can easily prove its strength thus reminding the voters of the stronger side as Indian voters tend to vote the winning candidate.
10. FAILURE
The government very well knows that the no-confidence motion led by the opposition is going to fail as the opposition doesn’t have enough numbers. When the opposition fails to win the motion, the government will gain as they will definitely look more powerful than the opposition.
